(Riddle of the Day)
Do you enjoy word puzzles, brain teasers, and good-natured competition? Do you find the Icelandic language fun and want to expand your vocabulary? Then Gáta dagsins - the Riddle of the Day - is for you!
Gáta dagsins is a daily puzzle where players compete to find the highest-scoring move on a crossword board. A new riddle is published every day. Participation is free and accessible to all logged-in users on Málstaður. The highest-scoring players earn a spot on a real-time leaderboard. Additionally, subscribers can access the archive of older riddles and reveal the best solution if they get stuck.
Gáta dagsins is a daily challenge playable on computers, tablets, and smartphones. It is built on the foundation of the ever-popular Netskrafl (an online Icelandic crossword game in the Scrabble® genre). The board is pre-filled with words, and the challenge is to find the highest-scoring move possible using a given rack of letters.
As fans of Netskrafl know, the game features bots with vocabularies of varying difficulty. These bots play a key role in the creation of each daily riddle: the board setup is generated by pitting two bots against each other. The specific puzzle scenario is then extracted from that match to create a game that is both fun and rigorously challenging.
Ránmorð,
is that a word?
Netskrafl, an online word game launched in 2015, allows people to play against each other or against robots of varying skill levels. Since its inception, nearly 42,000 players have registered. The game is free to play, but a subscription opens up access to unlimited number of games, after-the-fact game review, and all robot opponents.
The vocabulary used in Netskrafl is based on the Database of Modern Icelandic Inflection (DMII), maintained by the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies. And yes, according to DMII ránmorð is indeed a word!
Netskrafl has become a hit as an entertaining and mentally stimulating pastime for anyone who enjoys the Icelandic language, crosswords, and exciting competitions. At netskrafl.is, users can play against other people or challenge the bot opponents Amlóði, Miðlungur, and Fullsterkur. The vocabulary used in Netskrafl is based on the Database of Modern Icelandic Inflections (DMII), which contains about 2.4 million unique word forms that can be played in the game.
Netskrafl players gather in a lively Facebook group, where virtual tournaments are organized on a regular basis.
