Miðeind is a platform for a select group of people who want to combine doing good, learning, developing, and having fun in their work. We find sustainable ways to seize opportunities and tackle challenges that Iceland and Icelandic—and other smaller languages—face in the age of artificial intelligence.
Miðeind can never be anything other than the group of people who unite under its banner and purpose. The group shares the desire to work in language technology and artificial intelligence and to benefit the cause of Icelandic and other smaller languages, while constantly learning and developing in their work — and having fun all along.
Miðeind is currently incorporated as a company, and not, for example, as a foundation. This may change; the operational form should serve the goal.
Miðeind supports Icelandic and enhances its standing with the help of technology and artificial intelligence. We want to help language users—both native speakers and immigrants, young and old, whether they struggle with disabilities or not—to express themselves in speech and writing, and to understand written and spoken language, both in Icelandic and other languages through machine translation. We want to help people access knowledge and achieve the smoothest possible communication regardless of languages and location, in work and daily life. We want to defend objective truth, strengthen the foundations of democratic society and human rights, minimize harmful bias, and work against hate speech.
Miðeind finds sustainable ways: The task at hand is to make a difference in the field, not just short-term or until resources run out, but for the long haul. This requires approaches, or combinations of approaches, that are sustainable either individually or at least collectively. Such approaches can involve various forms of collaboration—for example, with universities, funds, private companies, and public entities, both domestically and abroad.
Miðeind seizes opportunities: Certain applications and solutions are likely to be competitive and profitable in the market. Miðeind identifies and seizes such opportunities when they arise and align with the company's purpose and main strategy. The company also draws lessons from previous technological revolutions about strategies to survive, selecting and rejecting options, and emerging successfully.
Miðeind tackles challenges: Miðeind doesn't require projects to be demonstrably profitable to take them on as challenges, if they are socially important and serve our goals. Often, one can learn from difficult challenges, and solving them can be rewarding for the benefit of users and society.
Miðeind disseminates knowledge: The methods Miðeind develops and the experience we gather working with Icelandic can potentially benefit other smaller languages. We're ready to lend a helping hand to other language communities working toward similar goals for their languages as we have for Icelandic. Miðeind also strives to educate Icelandic authorities and Icelandic language users about the current state of knowledge and the challenges and opportunities that exist at any given time.
Miðeind combines language technology and artificial intelligence: Miðeind focuses on building knowledge, impact, and experience in language technology and artificial intelligence, especially for Icelandic and other smaller languages. Methods that maximize leverage—achieving the most impactful results with the least manual work and funding (such as using artificial intelligence to create training data for more powerful AI)—are a special focus area.
Miðeind takes on projects that others don't: As AI technology advances, opportunities for application and product development in language technology are opening up that don't require the deep expertise in neural networks, language models, and language resources that Miðeind's staff possesses. Miðeind leaves such practical application projects to others and instead focuses its efforts on projects and problems where Miðeind is uniquely positioned to develop the right solution.
Miðeind is purpose-driven: Miðeind's overarching goal is not to generate profits for shareholders but to deliver benefits to society. If the company finds a path to sustainability and profitability, the aim will always be to return that profit to society in the form of increased investment in technology and projects that cannot be undertaken solely on market terms.
