Málstaður continues at full steam, and as we announced before the weekend, there are now over 10,000 registered users! We sincerely thank you for the reception and have now made Málstaður even more useful and user-friendly.
The translation solution Erlendur has now joined the group of accessible solutions in Málstaður. With Erlendur, it's possible to translate text in any language in an easy and accessible manner. Both the original text and the translation can be downloaded as text files, and Erlendur supports the main file formats (.docx, .odt, .md).
The translations take into account the broader context in the text and therefore work best for longer texts. Idioms are considered in the translation, and the output reflects the tone of the original text. Erlendur also handles the translation of subtitles within Hreimur, and thus the language selection there has increased substantially.
In the image below, you can see how skillfully Erlendur manages to translate all kinds of figurative idioms from English ("throw in the towel") into Icelandic ("gefast upp" - give up). This kind of translation requires "understanding" of the text, beyond being able to translate it word for word. We recommend that readers try the text in other translation systems and see the difference.
Erlendur has broad applicability and its interaction with other solutions within Málstaður is evident. As an example, it is possible to send a recording to Hreimur, get transcribed text out, send it to Málfríður for refinement, and finally send it to Erlendur for translation. The possibilities are numerous, and we look forward to hearing how it benefits you!
Group subscription is now available through self-service on Málstaður's subscription page. It's an excellent option for companies and institutions that want to provide their staff with access to Málstaður's solutions, but it's also ideal for other groups and individuals who need more extensive usage than a standard individual subscription offers.
With a group subscription, users get access to the same features as in an individual subscription, but additionally, a group dashboard is offered that allows administrators to have an overview of usage within the group and manage access efficiently.
The subscription fee for basic access to group subscription is 1,690 ISK + VAT per month for each user. Usage fees are added for those Málstaður services that are paid based on usage. You can therefore use Málstaður's solutions as you see fit and then pay according to usage.
Hreimur: 1,500 ISK + VAT per hour.
Erlendur: 5 ISK + VAT per 1,000 characters.

The Group Dashboard is accessible to group owners and administrators by clicking on the user button in the top right corner of the page.
On the group dashboard, there are various options for fine-tuning the subscription.
Usage settings allow you to monitor the group's usage, both in the current month and previous months (from February 2025). There, you can also set a maximum monthly usage amount that helps keep costs within budget. At the moment, these costs are solely related to the use of Hreimur and Erlendur, but new functionality in Málfríður will be added to this platform in the near future.
Under this tab, you can see the total cost amount, itemized by usage and number of users for each month. This allows administrators to have an accurate overview of costs and plan usage within the group accordingly.
The access control allows administrators to invite new users to the group with a simple email invitation. Users are categorized into three types with different permissions:
Owner: A single individual who cannot be deleted from the group. The owner will later be able to deactivate the entire group if necessary. The owner also has all the rights of an administrator.
Administrator: Has access to the dashboard and can add users and manage group settings. An administrator also has the same rights as a regular user.
User: Can use all solutions on Málstaður through the group, i.e., Málfríður, Hreimur, Erlendur and Svarkur.
In the near future, we aim to also display information about when each user was last active on Málstaður.
In addition to all this, we have increased the benefits you receive in Málstaður as a subscriber. The maximum length of audio files that can be submitted to Hreimur has been increased from one hour to three. Access to Erlendur is included in the individual subscription, and you can translate up to 500,000 characters per month. Erlendur is also available with free access but to a lesser extent, or 10,000 characters per month.
We have updated our terms to reflect these changes, and now there are specific terms for the group subscription. The general terms were also updated to align with the new terms.
