Miðeind hlýtur styrk úr Skerfi

We are proud to announce that Miðeind has received a grant from Skerfur. Skerfur is a fund that supports projects that promote the implementation or development of practical end solutions based on Icelandic language technology.

The project involves implementing an OCR solution into Málstaður, Miðeind's content processing platform, and making it accessible as an API. The general goal is to put the development of language technology and artificial intelligence of recent years into the hands of end-users, and to encourage the use of Icelandic as much as possible. LÍSA unlocks access to a large amount of Icelandic data that is “locked” in images and PDF documents. The project improves services for everyone who writes and reads in Icelandic.

We are also a partner of Fjölmennt and the Centre for Easy-to-Read Language in another project that received a grant.

The project aims to improve Miðeind's solution for plain language and go even further in serving different target groups. Icelandic and the support for it are the foundation; the functionality facilitates the dissemination of content in Icelandic.

In Miðeind's Málstaður, text can now be significantly simplified with a single button. Text simplification is about creating a universally simple version of a text, to make it accessible to many groups of people and to explain complex issues in a simple way. The intention of this project is to go further in simplification and also offer so-called easy-to-read language, which requires meeting specific and more detailed requirements for the presentation and content of the text.

Both projects align well with Miðeind's goal of putting technology into the hands of the public, and we are very much looking forward to introducing new functionality.
